Snack Time, Anytime: How Snacking Is Becoming A Lifestyle

SNACKS EXPAND BEYOND TRADITIONAL GRAB-AND-GO FORMATS

Consumers continue to embrace ready-to-eat snacks, from salty and savory potato chips to plant-based better-for-you options. Meat and cheese snacks are also gaining momentum. At the same time, the category is expanding beyond traditional grab-and-go formats to include dips and guacamole for chips and frozen heat-and-serve finger foods that fit a wider range of eating occasions. “Snacking is everything – literally. Consumers increasingly expect products to deliver function, fuel, and fun without compromise, fitting seamlessly into everything from meal replacements to on-the-go lifestyles,” states Sally Lyons Wyatt of Circana. Similarly, Nicole Stefanacci of Popchips says, “[Consumers are] increasingly embracing snacks as more than just a between-meal indulgence. It’s true: Snacking has officially become a lifestyle.”

SNACKING PHENOMENON

Snacking is universal and has been proliferating over the last two decades. Mondelēz International’s 2026 State of Snacking report1 found that snacking is a global phenomenon, with consumers often snacking:

  • In Australia, 70% of adults have a snack daily
  • In the U.S., 66% snack daily, with 17% reaching for snacks three or more times per day
  • 61% of Germans snack daily, with a third of Germans snacking twice a day or more
  • In Brazil, 43% snack between lunch and dinner every day
  • In Thailand, 55% of adults snack daily, with 11% reaching for snacks four or more times per day

Similarly, Popchips’ research2 revealed that Americans reach for a snack four times per day, on average. Furthermore, a survey of 2,000 adults3, commissioned by European Mushrooms, found that Gen Z respondents consumed an average of 81 snacks each month, nearly twice as many as Baby Boomers, who averaged 45.

SNACKS AND MEALS BLUR

The snackification trend continues to escalate as snacks and meals blur. “Snacks increasingly flex across dayparts, ages, and occasions, with some snacks blurring into mini meals, sides, and functional boosts,” notes Circana4. According to Innova Market Insights5, more than 2 in 5 Gen Z and Millennial consumers replace meals with snacks at least once a day. Likewise, 41% of Gen Z prefer snacks to full meals, compared with 31% of all respondents3.

A national survey of 5,000 U.S. adults from all 50 states by Popchips6 found that:

  • 79% of Americans consider themselves “snack people,” preferring to graze throughout the day rather than stick to traditional meals
  • 39% admit they’ve gone entire days without eating a real meal, relying on snacks alone

Mondelēz International’s 2026 State of Snacking report1 echoes this sentiment:

  • 41% of U.S. snack consumers now eat snacks in place of a regular meal
  • 44% of Australian snack consumers replace a proper meal with snacks at least once a week
  • 22% of snack consumers in India use snacks to replace breakfast, lunch, or dinner
  • 38% of U.S. snack consumers aged 18–24 say snacking is less stressful than preparing meals
  • 57% of snack consumers aged 25–34 see snacks as a better value than a full meal

Innova research7 below shows that younger consumers are far more likely to replace meals with snacks, while Boomers largely maintain traditional meal structures.

TAKE A DIP

The dips and spreads market was valued at $115.56 billion in 2026, and is projected to reach $145.93 billion in 2030 at a CAGR of 6%, according to Research and Markets 8. One-third of U.S. launches of dips and savory spreads are private label, according to Innova9. 71% of consumers consume savory spreads, while 72% eat dips once a week or less, suggesting the category remains occasional, not habitual, according to Innova10.

“Shoppers increasingly rely on refrigerated dips to anchor snack, meal, and entertaining occasions throughout the day. And refrigerated dips are no longer a side item – they’re driving the occasion,” states Chris Monahan of Wholly Guacamole.

From Mexican to Mediterranean influences, brands are launching a variety of refrigerated dips. Pancho’s Cheese Dip added two new flavors to its refrigerated line-up: Triple Cheese and Salsa Queso. Bitchin’ Chips joins the Bitchin’ Sauce’s refrigerated almond-based dips line. The chips are formulated with white corn, expeller-pressed almond oil, and sea salt. Bitchin’ Bean Dip and Totally Nuts are the brand’s newest dips. Bitchin’ Bean Dip Smoky Chipotle contains pinto beans, grapeseed oil, lemon juice, soy sauce, nutritional yeast, and smoky chipotle peppers. Totally Nuts’ primary ingredient is California almonds and is available in Creamy Jalapeño, Pickled Pepper, and Smokeshow varieties. Good Foods Group adds Avocado Green Goddess, Garden Party Spinach Veggie Dip, and Spicy Tzatziki to its dairy dip line. Avocado Green Goddess blends avocados, lemon, fresh herbs, and green onion, while Garden Party features spinach, red bell pepper, carrots, and cauliflower. The Spicy Tzatziki is made with Greek yogurt and includes cucumbers, jalapeño, and serrano peppers.

GUACAMOLE, GUAC, GUACAMOLE

In addition to dips and spreads, guacamole is having a moment. According to the IMARC Group11, the U.S. guacamole market reached $501.8 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $798.9 million by 2034, with a CAGR of 5.14%. Guacamole is a staple chip accompaniment. Brands are launching a variety of guacamole flavors varying in heat levels. For example, last year, in collaboration with Tajín, Wholly® Guacamole introduced Chile Lime, featuring two sachets of Tajín® Clásico Seasoning for customization. Additionally, the brand introduced dairy-free, indulgent dips in three flavors: Roasted Red Bell Pepper & Spinach, Spinach & Artichoke, and Tomato & Basil. Tostitos enters the refrigerated section with Tostitos Chunky Guacamole Mild, Hint of Lime flavor. The dip features Hass avocados, onions, tomatoes, jalapeño peppers, spices, and a lime flavoring. ¡Yo Quiero! introduced a line of Mexican-inspired dips, including Guacamole in Mild and Spicy varieties. The “creamy avocado flavor is balanced with tomatillo, jalapeno, onions, and traditional seasonings.” The Cantina Salsas come in Cantina Style Red Salsa (Mild and Medium), Fire Roasted Salsa (Medium), and Roasted Hatch Verde (Medium).

SNACKS HEAT UP THE FREEZER AILSE

Frozen foods are getting a glow-up driven by convenience. Frozen snacks are joining the movement with easy heat-and-serve options and finger foods. The U.S. frozen snacks market was valued at $4.76 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $11 billion by 2033, with a CAGR of 10.9%, according to Grand View Research12. As Innova’s chart13 below illustrates, consumers are turning to snacks throughout the day and across a growing range of occasions.

In response, brands are launching a variety of convenient frozen snacks. Cheese is a popular snack in all forms. For example, Farm Rich introduced two new additions to its lineup: Snack-Sized Ranch Mini Mozzarella Sticks and Snack-Sized Loaded Potato Tots. PizzaStix and QuesoStix join SuperPretzel’s portfolio. The PizzaStix is filled with cheese and pizza sauce, while QuesoStix features a spicy cheese blend. The fully baked pretzel stixs can be heated in the oven or air fryer. Dr. Praeger’s Mac & Cheese Stars contain cheddar, mozzarella, butternut squash, and carrots.

Fried chicken in various forms is also a well-liked snack. Banquet MEGA released Chicken Tenders in Original Crispy and Spicy Crispy flavors, made with 100% natural white meat seasoned chicken. Vlasic Pickles offers frozen Vlasic Crispy Fried Pickles, featuring breaded dill pickle chips designed for air fryers. In June, Banquet and Vlasic teamed up on the Banquet’s Vlasic Dill Pickle Flavored Crispy Chicken Filets.

HANDHELDS ARE CONVENIENT

According to Circana14, the frozen appetizers/snack rolls category grew 1% with $4.3 billion in sales for the 52 weeks ending May 17, 2026. For breakfast, Feel Good Foods launched gluten-free Pancake & Sausage Sticks. Hot Pockets® debuted a Snack Breaks line of bite-sized squares for the microwave or air fryer. The five varieties include Cheesy Stuffed Pretzel with Bacon, Gooey Apple Pie, Melty Nacho Beef, Spicy Jalapeño Popper, and Ultimate Cheddar. The four savory options contain reduced fat cheeses. Last year, Hot Pockets collaborated with Hidden Valley Ranch on two limited-edition flavors. The Ranch Lovers Pepperoni and Ranch Lovers Buffalo Style Chicken both highlight ranch-seasoned crust with creamy Hidden Valley sauce.

Más Bold by Ruiz Food Products Inc. launched an El Monterey taquito product line for snacking in four popular Mexican and American flavors. The varieties include Buffalo-Style Chicken, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Philly-Style Cheesesteak, and Spicy Chipotle Beef, each infused in a seasoned shell. Totino’s adds Blasted Pizza Rolls to its lineup, available in Garlic Parm, Nacho Boom, and Zesty Limón flavors. The crusts are coated with the flavor.

THE FUTURE OF SNACKING

Dips, spreads, guacamole, frozen snacks, and handhelds will continue expanding the definition of what a snack can be. This shift aligns with Innova’s Made for Moments trend15, which highlights how consumers increasingly seek products designed for specific occasions and experiences. “Occasion-based innovation is growing, as evidenced by the range of format choices in snacks, fresh meal options, and single-serve versatility. For lunch and dinner at home, fresh formats and frozen formats are popular.”

As habits and lifestyles shift, consumers will gravitate toward options that fit effortlessly into their changing routines. Snacks have advanced beyond being a placeholder between meals – for some, snacks are a meal. Interestingly, more than one-third of respondents reported that having snacks to look forward to throughout the day gives them something to anticipate, per European Mushrooms’ survey3. The future of snacking will be defined by solutions that meet consumers where their evolving needs and routines intersect.
